Taoism and Atheism? Hold on a moment....what?

I was just wondering...when I first came across the Tao Te Ching, or Dao De ching, I was put under the impression that Taoists didn't have any deities. I myself consider myself a philosophical Taoist, as I have taken many principles from Taoism and applied them to my life. But then, I found that there were indeed beings that one would clify as "Taoist Deities." Okay...I'm a little confused. Are there different kinds of Taoism besides philisophical and religous?
