When is it alright to beat your wife or girlfriend?

In North America (The US in particular) there has been this taboo developed around domestic violence against women which i actually find quite ironic as American women seem the least respectful and loyal to men (look at relationship and divorce statistics). Basically my question is and I would prefer male answers, when do you think it is appropriate to stick up for yourself physically against women and not become emasculated by them.
