Mexican-American war help!!!?

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote of the Mexican War, "The United States will conquer Mexicao, but it will be as the man who swallows the arsenic which brings him down in turn. Mexico will poison us." es the validity of Emerson's prophecy...I believe its true but am having trouble with evidence
